Carved Farm Wagons
This website deals with the history, inventory and restoration of Dutch farm wagons (“known as boerenwagens”). We are currently compiling an inventory of wooden carved farm wagons from the river area (of South Holland), the so-called hay wagon.
Until now, there are about 65 wood carved farm wagons known to exist, of which a high proportion is not operable. You have, among others, the wagons at the Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem, some 10 carved wooden wagons and 5 play wagons of which some are half decayed and are not operable. In a fire there in 1995, 10 play wagons and 8 farm wagons were lost.
Some 25 wagons have been made ride-able and useable in the past few years, which is great to see. The impetus for this restoration is in great part due to the world championship of four-horse hitch wagons held in Marienwaard, Geldermalsen, Netherlands. As well, there are about 11 or 12 play wagons in the river area of South Holland, of which barely two are useable. These play wagons are located in the Hoek of Holland. A play wagon is a smaller model of the farm wagon and is suited for personal transport. The farm wagon is in essence a business wagon. There are also some 15 non-carved wooden wagons that have been located in the polders of South Holland and surrounding area; the strange thing is that these are scarcer than the carved wagons. These are mostly of a later date and had almost no carving and are therefore not seen as crafted with exceptional skill, but they certainly should be!
Below is often still another article which is also found on this website.
