The Latin Farmer Wagon

The Latin and the Hurwenen farm wagons stand next to each other in these front and rear views. The Latin farm wagon is named ‘De Koopman’ (The Merchant) as per the text painted on the tailboard. You can read the text by clicking on the photo to the left. The text is not original from 1897 but was painted on around 1950. Very skillfully applied; first measuring and drawing, the letters become smaller as you progress towards the bottom of the tailboard; thereafter the letters are set in paint with an artist’s brush. A nice bit of painting. The two side support beams of the tailboard, a quarter of the upper beam and the bottom beam are completely renewed. There are few of such high tailboards. The nice thing about the Latin wagon is the two very high sloped sideboards; they connect very well with the tailboard.

< Sitting bench footboard with shining symbolic carvings: the good and the evil horses that together hold the weigh scale of life in balance. The evil horse with the tail between his legs; the good horse with raised tail symbolizing prosperity, good luck and happiness. The text “Memento Mori” means “Think About Dying”. The people in earlier times lived closer to death. Below the blue band one can see a portion of the front bolster.

< A fine day with nice weather and a good atmosphere. They organizers only forgot the directional sign to our terrain destination but it all came together anyway.
