The Hurwenen Farm Wagon

< The chock is placed against an iron plate on the rear bolster. In the Alblasserwaard, the chocks were placed against the front bolster and were therefore less obvious. The large white stripes on the wheel hubs are original; they were revealed after removal of a thick layer of red paint. Without these stripes the wagon would appear somewhat somber. The royal Louis 16th vase is heavily gilded and the merry white laurel wreath on a red field is quite different; we also see a beautiful combination of white flowers on the sideboards and on the carved ladders above the sideboards. The rare brake shoe or skid is visible; usually a brake chain was used with a hook. These brake shoes were often seen on heavy wagons such as stage coaches. With a brake shoe, the wheel turned in the shoe whereby the wheel and shoe dragged their way to a stop. With a brake chain with hook, the hook was attached to the wheel rim and then caught on a spoke but this caused damage to the spoke.

An original wagon from Hurwenen in the river area of Gelderland, Netherlands. Built by van Mourik of Buurmalsen. The photos on this page can be seen in detail by placing your mouse over the photo and clicking the left button. >

< The carved ladders above the sideboards have been restored as well as the sideboards; the ladders have a large dragon’s head followed by sawn and carved hand grips; the white flowers give a lively effect. The colours used are the original colours.

High harnessing point, swingletree with iron strips, fastened on fixed tongue. Old long tree made of American pine, light and strong from a mowing machine; it is just 2.7 metres in length but because of its high pulling point that is enough. >

< Harnessing the horse is father Cor van Asperen + 2009.

On a winter’s day the wagon waits for work…
On the seat it is always cold. >
